Home Instead® staff and Care Professionals from the Naperville, Illinois, franchise recently gathered during a cold, rainy day to warmly remember friends and senior clients who recently have passed away. Our seniors shared their lives and stories with us. As Care Pros, we grow attached and grieve at their passing. Although we make their final chapter happier and safer, a grieving process is healthy. Home Instead supports and enables this process.
Each Care Pro spoke freely about a client or Home Instead loved one, choosing the senior to fondly remember. Each attendee at the Monthly Remembrance then posted a butterfly on a rainbow wall. Here are their words:
“I lost a friend, but I gained an angel.”
“I thought about not coming today, but I’m so glad I came. My late client, Marilyn, deserves to be remembered!”
“It’s so important that we help each other remember the good times we had with our clients.”
“In my other jobs, we were always expected to move on to the next day after a resident passed, as if nothing happened. But I think about my late clients every day, so gathering like this to honor their memory is wonderful. It is important to have a place where I can talk about them!”
“I enjoyed hearing the words of wisdom from all of your recently departed friends.”
Finally, from a Care Pro of the Month: “I cried when my client’s sister-in-law told me it was not looking good for my client. On a Wednesday I went to see my client even though I did not have a shift with her. She was not conscious. I blessed her, anointed her with oil and played Christian music for her. After I went home, two or three hours later, I got the call. She had gone home to be with the Lord. I thanked God for the opportunity to get to know and serve her. Through it all, Home Instead checked on me. I appreciated that.”
